The material is smooth, but not super-smooth. I usually use a "control" mousepad, and this is slicker than that one but not as fast as my other "speed" mousepad I don't much use. The stitching around the border is well-done, and doesn't cause any warping or weirdness. Seems like it will keep the pad nice for longer than traditional cloth-n-rubber mousepads.I got maroon. This looks nice with my reddish-toned cherry wood desk, and I know it will keep it protected better than the simple mousepad I had before.Recommended! Applying 4 stars for now and may update depending on wear and tear over the next 3-12 months. :-)UPDATE: 01/30/16I used this for a short while, then gave it to my boyfriend to check out. It was in perfect condition when he got it from me and he is the true test of durability. I have nicknamed him, "The Destroyer of Things". He melts through plastic finishes, dings wood like a woodpecker, breaks headphone cords, stains everything, etc.Within a week he had covered this mat in food and ecig juice stains. Otherwise it looked nice with no scuffing from mouse, keyboard or any other of the objects he placed on this large mat. The binding threads looked prist, too. But some weeks later it was an oily grease-stained mess.Finally ready for the ultimate test, as you can see I mention to the commenter on my review who dinged me as "Not Helpful" for putting 4 stars until I thoroughly tested durability, I just needed to wait for my move to be done. Once in my new home I put the mat through with a load of red towels and quality heavy pair of jeans. Figured it would be the ultimate ULTIMATE test.The mat passed with flying colors. Not only did all the stains from various sources - many being oil-based - come out, but the mat looked brand new despite washing with towels and jeans. The surface of the neoprene was unstained, smooth, free of scuffs, pills, residue or static cling fibers. The binding was perfectly intact. The rubber backing was undisturbed by the wash, perfectly smooth, flat and without any indication of breakdown.Hands down this is the best mat I've ever had. Though I love preetty, patterned mats like Magic, WoW and others provide, those mats don't stand up to squat. They fray, warp, stain, scuff and can't be effectively washed. If you are looking for a computing or gaming mat, get this one. It's cheap and it's simply the very best - spoken from someone who has used all sorts of mats and mouse pads from metal to plastic, and fabric of all sorts in casual to professional environs. Plus this baby went through a testing by, "The Destroyer of Things".Note: wash this mat on cool or cold, to avoid warp, shrink and undue wear. I also advise air dry as even no-heat tumble causes trauma to the rubberized backing of mats and this fabric will air dry quickly. I dried mine on a rounded towel rod and it was swiftly used and free of any warping from hanging to dry.Hope this helps and good luck with your perfect mat!UPDATE: 03/25/2016 - I bought a second mat for myself, not for home use, but for at work. It nearly spans the width of my desk, providing tons of coverage for my Hard to get excited by just a mouse pad but this one is worth talking about. I must confess that I've never trusted cloth mouse pads because they typically wear out and fray. I gave this a shot just because it was low enough in price. After a couple of months of use, it started to show areas that accumulated dirt and skin oils which is precisely what I was afraid of. I placed it in the washing machine on gentle cycle expecting the worse and what came out was a mat that looked brand new. I expected to see a worn spot in one corner where I used the mat most. However, after it came out of the wash I could NOT tell which corner of the mat I had used the mouse, there was no wear pattern at all. I was impressed!!! Note I use a mouse pad about 10 hours a day so I really am hard on mice pads and even the expensive ones usually last only a few months before they get icky or smooth to the point where they don't work well.It's ideal for game play and especially if you have a 4K or multi-monitor setup where you need the real estate to drag the mouse. The nice wide format makes for smooth gliding and it really transformed the use of my mouse. I even went back to a wired mouse just because I could.This is exactly what I was looking for! Nice plain black mat, without any gaudy branding (or any branding at all for that matter!).Comes shipped rolled up, and had a little curl (towards the desk, which is the better direction for curl) but that curl seems to be gone after about a day of using it. Edges are nice and soft with stitching. Bottom has a grippy texture and doesn't slip. Mine isn't a perfect rectangle - the long edge has a bit of an arc to it (out by maybe 1/8 to 3/16" at the edges for a 30" mat) but it is not really noticeable.Mousing surface is nice. A bit faster than my previous hard pad, but not so fast that I can't control it. Makes mousing easier and just blends into the background - which is good!I find the 16"x30" size to be just right for my 48" wide desk. It let's me have my gigantic original Logitech G15 keyboard centered and gives plenty of room for the mouse to the side while leaving the other end of the desk clear.Very good, would buy again!I have a large, three piece desk and hutch set that takes up a lot of space. I love this xxl mouse pad so much. I had previously bought an xlarge one from a different seller and while I have no complaints about it my laptop would teeter from the left side or back because it wasn't large enough. I ordered this one instead and it is great. I use it as a mouse pad and also as a desk pad because it is so large. I can comfortably fit my 17.3 inch laptop on it with plenty of room to spare on each side and more than enough room to use the mouse. It is large enough that I can keep the computer close to the front of the desk while I am working but push it towards the back and have enough room to write without going off the back of the pad. The stitched edges are great and soft and durable. I have no problem with it gripping the desk and not moving. The edges don't roll up and it doesn't have any odor. Also, I love that there is no logo printed anywhere so I don't have to worry about it wearing off or my mouse getting stuck while gliding around. The material is very smooth and it doesn't even seem to accumulate dust or lint. I am glad that it's not only a mouse pad but also protects my desk from scratches. I can't think of a negative thing to say about it, I am very pleased with this purchase. If I could I would custom order one to the exact size of my entire desk.
